DESERT ROSE PERFORMS AT SUIDOOSTERFEES AT GARDEN COURT THEATRE

DESERT ROSE

PRESENTS
SUFI AFRICAN VIBRATIONS
A Mystical Musical Journey

FRI 31 JAN @ 18H00
SAT 1 FEB @ 20H30
SUN 2 FEB @ 13H30

Desert Rose, leaders in composing and performing sacred world music, internationally known for combining ancient cultures and languages within classical compositions, will do 3 performances of their international show, “Sufi African Vibrations” for the annual Suidoosterfees at the Garden Court Theatre, University Estate in January and February.

“I have been a musician and composer of my own songs for over 40 years and have attended thousands of live performances of every genre of music available to my ears. The music of Desert Rose is something of a new league to me. It reaches the innermost depths of your soul and you feel the raw emotion of what is going on in the music. I will only be happy when I have heard them perform in world class venues to massive crowds. The work they are doing to bring the world’s eclectic mix of people together through music is truly wonderful.” said Jon Boys, Director of Inner Peace Centre For Conscious Living, Letchworth, UK after attending a Desert Rose show in London in June 2012.

Desert Rose successfully toured the UK, Singapore and Malaysia in 2012/2013 with their Sufi African Vibrations Concerts and received standing ovations in London at the St Ethelburgas Centre for Peace and Reconciliation and performed to full houses at the annual “Tapestry of Sacred Music Festival” at the world renowned Esplanade Theatre in Singapore in April 2013.

The group, founded in 2000 by composer, Lynne Holmes-Ganief, started their live performance career in 2008. In 2012 they started their international performance career and toured London and Penang, Malaysia in June and July 2012. In 2013 they successfully performed in Singapore, Georgetown, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Warsaw, Poland. Plans for 2014 include tours to Dubai, Malaysia, UK, Turkey, Peru and India.

The music of Desert Rose can be described as a unique fusion born out of the Sufi traditions brought to Cape Town through slavery in the late 1600’s. A true musical melting pot of Cape Town’s tradition and history, for hundreds of years, this hidden treasure of ancient Sufi melodies brought from the Malay archipelago (Java, Indonesia, Malaysia) was passed down through oral tradition in the local Malay community, never reaching secular society due to its tradition being steeped in religious practice.

Desert rose have been the first musicians to bring this hidden treasure of sound to a universal audience. The music is multi-lingual with Arabic, Xhosa, liturgical chant in Latin and Aramaic. Sufi chants are evoked, breathing life into complex and hypnotic rhythms. A “other-worldly” conversation between Arabic and Xhosa can be heard over the sounds of African Harp, Uhadi, African Djembe Drum, Mouth Bow, Talking Drum, Mbira and soaring western Flute and orchestration. It is truly a unique musical journey, an alchemical process of extracting the best of our history and culture into aural gold.

The multicultural group will be directed by one of South Africa’s leading world music composers, Lynne Holmes-Ganief, who has composed 11 albums of which 5 were critically acclaimed and one given a 5 star rating by “Die Burger” in September 2010. She will be joined by SA’s leading Arabic and Sufi vocalist, Yusuf Ganief, African indigenous vocalist and multi instrumentalist (Mbira, African Mouth Bow, African Harp and Talking Drum), Nceba Gongxeka, African Percussionist and master Djembe player, Sisonke Godlo, classical Flautist and visual artist, Judy Woodborne.
