DESERT ROSE FUNDRAISER FOR MALAYSIA TOUR AT NOVALIS UBUNTU INSTITUTE - 1 JUNE 2013





 
DESERT ROSE, fresh from their successful tour in Singapore will do a fundraising concert for their upcoming tour to the Georgetown Festival in Penang, Malaysia. The group will perform their “Welcome the Light” concert at the Novalis Ubuntu Institute, Wynberg, at 7:30pm on Saturday, 1 june 2013.

Desert Rose has been invited to the annual Georgetown Festival to represent South Africa in a musical celebration of Malay Cultural Music on 16 June 2013. Lead vocalist, Yusuf Ganief, who has Javanese and Malaysian ancestry, to gether with Desert Rose's composer and music director, Lynne Holmes'Ganief, have been invited as part of the Malay DIaspora. The group will join musicians from the Malay Diaspora countries including Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, The Phillipines, Australia and South Africa. In addition Desert Rose will do an outreach programme with the students and staff of Universiti Sains Malaysia and offer a workshop incorporatng Sufi Music, its origins, purpose, the scientific findings of music’s healing power and a participative illustration/recital. This will be accompanied by a separate collaborative performance evening by Desert Rose and the students of the University’s music academy. 

Desert Rose, founded in 2000 by one of SA’s leading world music composers and music director for Desert Rose, Lynne Holmes-Ganief, has to date successfully produced and released 11 world music albums. Since 2005 they have produced critically acclaimed albums including Spirit of Africa, endorsed by Archbishop Tutu, The Prayer which has received international recognition and is distributed in Turkey and the UK, and Silence of the Music that received a 5 star rating for its music by mainstream media.

Desert Rose started their performing career in 2008 when they were invited to perform at a major sacred music festival based on the success of their first Sufi world music album, The Prayer. In 2010 they produced their first musical, Silence of the Music, which was successfully staged at the Baxter Theatre in 2010 and 2011. It was performed to standing ovations whilst the music received major accolades from media, audiences, government and clergy because of its theme of promoting cultural diversity and Oneness.

In 2012 the group produced their first Sufi African world music album, Tariqat(The Path). The music is a unique crossover of ancient Arabic Sufi melodies and chants combined with indigenous African sounds and rhythms. The group made their debut overseas tour to the UK in June 2012 and performed their Sufi African Vibrations Concerts, receiving standing ovations in London, Clophill and Oxford. In July 2012 they collaborated with Malaysian musicians at the annual Georgetown Festival in Penang.

Recently the group returned from a highly successful tour of Singapore where they performed at the annual “Tapestry of Sacred Music Festival” from 19 to 21 April 2013. The group performed to a diverse audience of Chinese, Indian, Malay and International visitors and recieved rave reviews for their integration of diverse cultral music especially Arabic, Xhosa and Sanskrit.

Led by Lynne Holmes-Ganief (music composer, director, keyboard and harp) and Yusuf Ganief (group manager and lead vocalist) the group draws on the sacred music of many cultures and religions to create a seamless world music experience. They share a vision of one common humanity and spirituality, weaving together disparate influences such as addictive African rhythms and soulful Sufi-inspired vocals. Their group will include Nceba Gongxeka (African indigenous multi-instrumentalist and vocalist), Sisonke Godlo (African percussionist) and Michaela Holmes (multilingual vocalist) and special guest artist, Judy Woodborne on Flute.

Funds raised from this concert will be used to fund the flights and other expenses for the tour. Funders and sponsors are welcome to do a trade exchange.
